Default Astronaut

hey guys!
Heres a wip of an astronaut!
i was looking for a very sacral mood here. is it a death scene? did JOE finally reach enlightment?
any ADVICE in form of word or OVERPAINT is HIGHLY appreciated. i know that i struggle with anatomy and skin tones =/
is the shadow area around his eyes not dark enough? ahh! i dont know

feel free to tell me what bugs you. i value your opinions!
many thanks in advance

wow, this is cool.
I tried to change some details in a small step-by-step overpainting. But these are really details and I'm not sure if this is the direction you want it to look like.

I primarly added a bit more constrast, and red color to the face. Especcially at the edges where shadow meets light. I think it helps alot to have a saturated red in this place, to bring more life to the piece, also simulating kind of subsurface-scattering. Probably it could be even more...

the original is the bottom one ;)

Great image dasAdam. . . . There's something about his calm expression and the helmet cracking that works well.

I think the higher contrast and reds that bsfea added helped bring more energy to the painting.

Cool stuff.

hehey, i remember that one :D
nice to see you continuing on this!
i just realised that, if you're saying you want this to be a downright sacral piece, your major problem is having this horizontal.
a horizonal compostion always implies a very grounded mood; it is the natural way we perceive the world arround us, it is 'keeping us on the ground'.
a vertical compostion however, implies the transcendent mood you are looking for; it 'connect's the ground with the sky', the "higher levels".
the colors are also important, but you already did the right choice with blue, as it also implies 'things with the mind'.
* so from from my view, for the deeper meaning you want to put into this picture, a vertical composition is crucial. ;)

(we had this in visual basics and color-theory in school, so i just had to put this down... don't be mad at me :D)

anyway, great work so far, i'm eager to see more of this! :)

@bsfea
yeah you are tottaly right about the red. ill add that =)
but im unsure about that hard contrast.ill add some saturation for sure but i rather thought that this huge flood of light would kill the blacks

@Street

@Monkey
ill try out the high format compositions for sure . thanks mate =)

Nice concept DasAdam. Regards to colour, from what ive read, if your painting using a high key of contrast then colours are normally balanced with a low key of chroma palette. I think the closer the colour is to any extreme lighting the greyer the local colour becomes and as the light is reduced the local colours gain in saturation. Rembrandt painted using a high key of contrast/low key of chroma as an example. Not sure if that's the effect you're looking for however

When do you plan of having the portrait finished?

Great artwork, like that space suit a lot! perhaps to sort out the face, address the fact that it's filling the helmet. There needs to be a bit of space in there
