Default Cotw 09 - #13 - Deep Sea Life [tri-colour]

All submissions this week MUST be done with these simple rules in mind:

*Image-size of 1000 x 650-pixels: (no more, and no less, either portrait or landscape)

*Image must be done entirely in set banner colour scheme: (You can only use the three colours in the banner image colour scheme! The image file is attached for you to download.)

*
Any use of textures is limited to (2)
: (textures can be used for anything from helping to bring about some material-contrast for your creature, or quickly adding a gritty, organic-overlay to your finished image. But whenever applying textures to an image, do so with the attitude of “less is more”...and don't use them as a mask for bad areas of your work; just put in the extra effort to make your work better!)

*Really focus on your creature concept here. ( But if you want include a background, thats fine! )

**
Lastly, you can spend no more than 4-full hours on your image this week...with perhaps, just a smidgen more, so that you can include your signature on it, ok? ;)

This weeks theme is:

Deep Sea Life

Have fun!

I assume we are allowed to mix, brighten and darken the colors as long as we don't add any new colors.

I reckon no, mainly because mixing and editing colours makes "new" colours lol, so would defeat the object of having 3 set colours.
But maybe you can, dont go by my say

Hey guys.

No to mixing to make different shades, but just use those three instead. Sticking to the [very] limited palette should help you concentrate on your creatures form.

I'm gonna try this =P

what if we accidentally like... mix a color? is there a way to check?

a few ideas on preventing this

save as a gif with only 4 colors, 3 for the image, 1 for the background
do not turn on opacity pressure and keep your opacity at 100% - will prevent it from mixing

Do we get disqualified if we have GASP 4 colors in it?

if we include a background after we're done with the creature can we use more then the 3 colors? I'd probably attempt to stay restricted to the color pallete but eventually you're gonna start to lose the creatures definition because of a lack of contrast...

my 2 and a half cents

If you're worried about contrast that much, you could always use black or white as the backrgound if its a problem

but if you're really clever you'll be able to just use your palette of three blues :P

As for how you paint it, thats all down to how you paint yourself.

No soft brushes?
No antialiased strokes?

I think the 2nd and the 3rd blue are very close in value. Maybe need to be darken the 3rd.
Anyway great theme.

guys, its an exercise in restricting your colour palettes to help you all understand value. You'll get slightly different shades where the brush opacity overlaps a value underneath it anyway, the emphasis is however just using them 3 colours only in a constructive way.

If you really wanted too cheat yourself and go outside of what this exercise is all about then paint your piece in grey scale then overlap a top layer with the darkest blue tone but seriously what will you have learnt from doing that ?????????????????????

maybe the restrictive colour palette has them stumped Ian, perhaps leaving it either b&w, all colour or 3 different shades for the next weeks challenge?
