pencil sharpener
hi everybody! i hope i can make myself clear...
i'm in a desperate search of a sharpener, apparently used by many artist (i've spotted the sharpened pencil tips in gnomon vids of feng zhu and ian mccaig; the sharpener itself however, isn't visible).
the thing about these tips is, that they are about twice as long as i could sharp them with my sharpener. i think the advantage of such a long tip would become handy for shading techniques, when putting down broad strokes; and a more subtile handling in general.
i add pictures to illustrate what i mean..
so my question is, does anyone of you guys know where i could get such a sharpener? or which company is producing them? (internets, shops etc)
till now i bought and tried like 5 different types, but none of them makes the tip longer- in fact they tend to make it shorter and thicker :(
i asked in school, nobody knew what i meant, and put me off to sandpaper, which i also tried... but you know, its just now the same :/
thanks in advance :)

Re: pencil sharpener
Hey DMonk, if you have any col-erase blue pencils around (prismacolor) would you mind seeing how they work with it? (i.e. is the 'lead' too fragile to get a good point with it, and use for the shading technique you are going for?)

Re: pencil sharpener
soo, i've just checked this thing out a bit, here are my impressions:
the cones of the sharpener have different shapes, thus it works in two steps. the first one only carves the wood; preparing the pencil to fit into the second cone, which sharpens the core. to the end of the sharpening process, you definitely have to be gentle with the pressure, i broke the end of the tip the first time.
while drawing however, the cores are pretty stable, and deliver a much more delicate drawing feeling due to the 'slimness' of the tip. this also has the effect, that the tip stays sharp longer while drawing.
here are some photos to the steps. also a before-after shot, using my normal sharpener; and a cm-scale.
(cb, haven't seen prismacolor arround here, but i normally use a blue faber castell... should work as well ;))
sweet thing all in all, i paid arround 6 pounds (7euro), including shipping. at the local story (in gb^^) it would be 4 pounds. slightly more expensive that a normal sharpener, but definitely worth it!
(irony: the sharpener is manufactured in germany, but i have to order it from gb -.-)

Re: pencil sharpener
Nice; Thanks much for the pics, Dmoney. I may swing for one and give it a tryout myself. I'm glad it seems to be working out as you'd hoped for the leaded pencils.
