This is my first true WIP painting. The idea is there's a girl and her mom painting the girl's bedroom, I'll have the girl painting the flowers and the mom painting the rest of the wall. I haven't done any studies in anatomy yet so I should probably get that done before trying to tackle painting the ladies :)

Hopefully this turns out looking decent!

well I'd suggest you started by doing some rough sketches to establish the best composition, viewing angle, point of interest, strongest focal point and the one which helps tell the story.

To paint a piece straight off the bat can prove difficult and frustrating unless your prepared to change the piece on the go, numerous times.

If you feel anatomy is the weaker area for you some studies would prove very helpful.

Ok, I'll try sketching out the basic scene before continuing the painting. Yeah, anatomy is definitely one of my weakest points, I'll try to get some studies into my sketchbook.

good, its always best to plan your paintings at first, a few thumbnails, choose the best compositional piece, select your colour palette etc etc. Once you have done this tried and tested method a fair few times you'll instinctively start off your pieces in a much more organised way and you'll find your 'painting' time will shorten.

You'll understand which colours work well together, values and how to construct your composition for maximum impact and for telling your story.

I've been curious, what exactly are thumbnails in the art sense? Just basic "mini" drawings to help find out the layout that you want?

Exactly that Funddevi - they are small sketches. Think stickynotes or drawings on the back of an envelope that give you a rough idea of layout and composition.

Well, I've decided to put this project on hold for now, just until I can get some good anatomy studies done...hopefully I'll have a tablet by then also.

Go ahead and delete this thread if you wish, I'll just re-make it when I get to working on it.
