soon, maybe in a couple of days, we'll be buying a scanner and I just wanted to know what you recommend... I want to know if possible, if there's something cheap but at the same time the scans come out in a good quality?

I have a Canon LiDE 90 which I can recommend fully, Ive had mine 2.5 years and its never let me down. Able to scan either flatbed or vertically due to a clever little side stand, dpi is a stunning 2400x4800.

i use a Canon LiDE 25. It works scans great and is around $40 or so. I got mine at Fry's.. but I used a LiDE 20 before and got it at walmart.
Basically... a flatbed scanner is the type of scanner most offices and homes use, it's has a surface area in which you lay the document on the "bed" of the scanner. There are also hand held and such that don't lay flat.
a flatbed basically means the original (the document being scanned) isn't fed into the scanner ie like a copier or fax machine. The document is placed on the static (non moving) platen (glass) and is scanned with a moving scan lamp.

ok we didin't buy a Canon (we didin't find any) instead we bought an HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-one which means it's a prnter, scanner and photocopier. It uses ethernet so no need for cables :D Anyway, the problem is that somehow it doesn't scan because it doesn't connect with the computer so my dad will fix that ASAP... still I'v tried the printer and the colours are excellent. In the manual it says the resolution (max dpi for scanner) is 4800 so is that good?

probably too late for you, luis, but maybe interesting for future reference: i found there's a lot of difference in scanners' capabalities when it comes to scanning pencil drawings. the dpi doesn't really matter all that much because truly, when was the last time you ever needed to scan something at more than 600dpi?
it's the range of subtle value changes that rules the waves! in that regard, i can totally recommend the Epson Perfection 1670 - or whatever their contemporary counterpart might be (i bought this puppy back in 2004)
oh and it also does transparants
I have a Epson Perfection 2450 Photo. Excellent scanner that does everything I need. Bought it a few years ago and wanted a scanner I could scan photos/negatives with but couldn't afford a full blown neg scanner. Does a great job of scanning anything, came with some good software at the time too. Only problem with it is some dust under the scanning bed that means a bit of time cleaning up the image in Photoshop afterwards.
