Default Size and resolution?

Hi everyone,

I've painted for a while now but I still don't really know what's recommended for canvas size and resolution.

I have questions like: Is the canvas size related to the resolution of the piece? Should I work with a large canvas for detailing? Or what does the resolution do?

I usually paint in 72dpi since I don't know what the difference is. I've heard that 300dpi is usually for printing or something similar?

So basically, It'd be great if someone could explain if one should work big/small, what are the benefits of high/or low resolution? Things like that.
I'm not sure its completely clear..

Thanks in advance,
Luis Felipe

its all dependant on what your painting mate, is it purely sketch or fully rendered for print/production?. I tend to just open any old size (portrait/landscape) up for the sketch stage at 72dpi, once happy I ramp up the resolution (300 dpi) which also increases my canvas size.

I normally use any size of Canvas and start it at 300dpi. My normal starting point is 1280 x1024 and I adjust the canvas size either by adding or cropping the piece.

Now, I have a friend who does the same method, but uses 600dpi. it's all in preferences I suppose. In my schooling, we were required to always use printing dpi - which you are right is 300.

I've enjoyed your work, so keep it up!

Oh ok, so I understand you work somewhat small at the beginning, once you decide you're happy on how its going you increase the resolution to 300dpi (which also makes your canvas larger). ok. One question:

How do I ramp up once I've started a piece at 72dpi?

hmm I see, do you paint zoomed out at the beginning? or do you stay at 100% zoom?

When you go into Image>Image Size>then change the dpi it will increase your image size buddy, and generally I work zoomed out to capture the entire composition then when working on details zoom in.

Well... the resolution... let's put some light here...

if it's for internet, just to publish around on the net, you ONLY need 72 dpi, cause that's the most an internet explorer (firefox, explorer, opera..) can show.

The size always change if you change resolution. Resolution means deepth, so if you got a 72dpi 1000x2000 if you change the dpi (deepth per pixel -if i can remember well-) to 300, it will all increase, so you0ll have then a 4167x8331.

I've made myself this question aswell but i cannot tell yet an apropiate answer, i think. i may star with a 2000x3000 at 72dpi and then when have to do some details, change it to 300dpi.

Btw, more than 600dpi is usually useless if it's not an specific work. AND always try to remember that RGB only for internet CMYK for print.

d. hope been helpful!
