Default SOTW 2010 - The ABYSS. (random theme)

Welcome to the CGPAD Speed of the Week - Random theme: The ABYSS

What lurks in the depths of your imagination? Is it some freakish under-sea leviathan? A ruined alien submersible? Mull's stinky jock-strap? or another dimension?....

Entry guidelines
:
> Entries must be speed paints based around the theme.
> WIPs are ok, but don't overload us with too many yeah? It's only lolly-pop sticks holding this thread up.
> The painting should take you no more than
3-4 hour max to complete.
> Please keep images to a forum friendly size. Like 2000px along the longest side.
> Any medium goes!
Except cheese, it gets REAL smelly.

Timescales:
Challenge starts Sunday, and ends on Friday. Each week. Voting takes place on Saturdays.

This week's theme: The ABYSS...

Nice one eclipse, really cool piece, like the color palette, the tree in the middle though looks a bit pasted and too brushy....!

Im still in WIP..... here some sketches about 30 min.... all in pencil....

Feels really diffrent than in PS....I like it alot!!!

C&C are welcome!

awesome sketches Thujon. I really like the bottom one on the first image. Like how you captured light and shadow and also has a greater sence of depth IMO than the other two sketches.

I can't really tell what the shape is but I'm sure you'll refine it in the final painting.

@Eclipse I like the mood in your work. Personally I don;t like the border on the top of the second image, makes me feel like I'm in a cave and makes the space feel smaller. However I don't know if this is the effect you were looking for.

Lighting in your second piece looks very interesting. I can make out some interesting shapes, like a city, lying behind the light. If this is your focal point I'd suggest adding a bit more contrast to the city/buildings stand out a bit more.

nice work guys!

I am not sure what I am going to do with the city at this point

@ Eclipse: I agree that adding the rock border narrows the viewers eye killing the idea/concept of depth ie the abyss, try adding a slightly darker/murky tone to help with that feeling of being deep down unless of course thats not the look your after.?

@ Thuj: with such strong pencils as those clearly are I would suggest learning to digitally colour them.
Looking over your SB and other works a weaker area for you has been your initial digital sketch, by learning to colour over these killer pencils you'll gain a wealth of experience with hand/stylus and before long your digi sketch will be as strong as your pencils.

Mull, thanks a lot for the comment, I must admitt I ve been thinking that too... but I always wanted to also learn to sketch directly in photoshop... well I guess Ill be sketching more by pencil from now on... It alwys been my favorite piece of art equipment... hehe

Well I tried it out... and started to color the third sketch... ( Louis thax a lot for the feedback, I liked the one that you pointed out too... but... I came to understand as a concept artist, one needs to "communicate ideas clearly".... and I saw that the most in the third sketch.... so here it goes... about 2 hours in it now.... will be refining the water, horizon, lightning, and giving it more depth....

EDIT:

The second one is with about 1 more work in it.... still not happy with the overall look.... not enough "waterish" feeling to it.... I got to look 4 some ref....
Cheerio

This is my final entry...about 3,5 hours...

Made it darker and cut some parts away... I guess they were taking away some focus....

nice entries guys!

Thujon, the bottom one of your first pencil sketches is awesome. I really would like to see it painted:)

here's my attempt. I started with a very quick custom brush sketch (about 5-10 minutes). Just throwing some colors and values down to get some inspiration on the topic.
Though the sketch gives some interesting shapes, it was very hard to come up with a concrete idea (not so creative these days...^^)
