Default SOTW - Design Brief Mini #5

Welcome to the CGPAD Speed of the Week - Design Brief Mini #5.

Our imaginary games development studio has come to CGPAD.org to find kick ass concept art. They need an awesome group of artists [you!] to create some concept art peices for their new PS3 project. Here's the brief:

Game synopsis
Mixed team of early 20th century explorers on an expedition to remote parts of the Great Rift Valley. Lead explorers stumble upon a huge sink-hole that leads down to a subterranean 'lost world'. But strange noises are heard over the radio and communication is mysteriously lost, and now, the team back at base-camp must attempt a rescue...

Concepts required for initial game art direction [please choose]

-
Initial panorama of a remote Great Rift Valley location.
- Base-camp near the sink-hole, showing start of descent by lead team.
- Lead exploration team having just reached the bottom, surveying the darkness.
- Lead exploration team moving through - point of lost contact!
- The rescue as it happens!

Concepts can be individual images of one of the above, or, if you are feeling brave, you can draw a sequence of 3.

Atmosphere / Setting
Only criteria is that images must have sense of 'the unknown' and 'unexplored'. Subterranean images must be gloomy as teams use torches.

Just for fun
When this challenge is over I'll put all your entries together into a big storyboard so we can see the action unfold! But, we need loads of cool entries to do this, so don't be afraid to get involved :)

Entry guidelines:
> Entries must be speed paints based around the theme.
> Only new images please - no old images or WIPs should be entered.
> The painting should take you no more than
4-5 hour max to complete.
> Please keep image to a forum friendly size. No big than 2500px on its longest side.
> Any medium goes!

Timescales:
Challenge starts Sunday, and ends on Friday. Each week. Voting takes place on Saturdays.

This week's theme: Design Brief Mini

Enjoy!

mull: indeed! SIR! ian SIR! has really done a nice job with setting up this one! this 'group' thing should definitely get things going this week :>

thujon: great work on those previews!
i'm swinging betwen the 3rd and the 4th, though i think compositional-wise the 4th is definitely the best! and i really like the view down on the hole in this one, while still having the camp in the foreground! :)
i'm eager to see more
to your question:
the first is from mind, and for the other two i had google earth still opened; and with this friggin 'terrain-checkbox you can literally dive into this huge crater oO... so looking at that definitely helped me to get things a bit better into perspective..
open the attached file with google earth, and you can get there :)

Started with some pencil tumbnails to explore the composition. Sorry for the crappy shot. I did it with my iSight camera. ;) I think I'll go with the bottom most tumbnail.

I think too that the bottom shot is the best.... little advice, I always felt better doing thumbs when I used a ruler to properly paint out the borders....

Then as the first thing, a horizonline, second very rough fomrs, thought about composition...refining.... detial.... rethink composition.... and so on.... hope ths helps...
