Default Vista + Photoshop = Difficulties?

I was working on the environmental workshop yesterday, trying to get my objects to look just right when Photoshop kept aggravating me. The problem was, each time I used the polygonal lasso tool some other program would be switched to, and then back to PS, making the selection I was working on close.

At first it would switch from PS to firefox, so I closed firefox thinking maybe there was an ad, or something that kept updating/refreshing so it switched to it. Unfortunately, this didn't solve the problem. I logged off AIM, MSN, and XFire since they all have their own ads and things, but this still didn't solve my problem! It just decided to flip to the desktop real quick. This frustrated me so much that I actually walked away from the computer so I wouldn't throw the monitor/mouse/keyboard and break it.

I didn't have anything open except PS, and the switching only happened when I was using the lasso tool and on the second or more click. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it?

Yeah, I'm making the selection, in this case making the block selection on the perspective grid, and then it quickly switches to something else, and back to PS. It's as if it's popping up to something and then minimizing it. Then the selection closes at what I had.

vista + 'insert program here' = problems. shortened to vista = problems. Man, I havent heard a good word yet about it. (I opted out of the windows loop myself. just drove me mad after a while)

Photoshop guys have also had their hands full getting it to run on OSx with intel chips, so im guessing they havent bug-checked it for vista so well. Most people sickin with XP it seems.

I'm kinda stuck with vista for now. This laptop could probably handle it, but working on a 14" screen would not be ideal, and my older 17" laptop overheats from even the simplest of tasks. My dad's new PC runs great, but it came with Vista so there's no downgrading to XP without buying it. :(

what version of Vista do you have? Home premium? Basic?Office etc.... you can go to display settings and set the display to Basic or classic which will make it have better performance (I think)

I have Vista Home Premium and nothings bad for now....

I am sorry to say but thats simply not true. The most problems causes just the people not knowing how to configure a computer the right way. I am working on vista since its launching date without any glitches. Runs smooth and good like XP...

@dan: did you tried to reset your photoshop settings, deleting all scratch files and stuff like that? Also which version of photoshop you're running?

I'm running 7, I should probably upgrade huh? I really miss the ability to select multiple layers. I have CS2 on my overheating laptop, but my dad has 7 on his desktop. Maybe I can get a some time to install that one and see if I still have the problem. Thanks guys. :)

Alright, I'll try to upgrade to CS3 this weekend then. :) I had the beta, but I think that ran out!
